Gerrman Stalingrad vets Helmut Cronenbroeck and Friedrich " Fred " Boening on the Mamayev Kurgan on Victory Day.
Helmut was with 9 Staffel Jagdgeschwader 3 "Udet" and was part of the Platzschutzstaffel at Pitomnik airfield , their unit of ME 109's was the air protection unit for the Airfield. Fred was Luftwaffe Flak and was a prisoner at Stalingrad for many years after his capture , unfortunately Fred has now passed on.

Awesome pictures Paul , great history , i definitly have this tour in mind , an amazeing place i will get to visit some time soon . One of the things i realy admire with the Russian people is the respect and honour they show there fallen , there statues and monuments are stunning , the shear size of Mamayev Kurgan just blows me away something i would love to see , keep up the great thread , cheers Raymond

Here an ignorant question my friend. Does anyone actually pick up and try to take a helmet or a jerrican? Do people and tourists actually respect the monuments? thanks, Raul.

The answer to both questions is yes , people will pick up any debris that is found on the Battlefield i doubt the jerrycan will still be there , but also the monuments are very much respected , however whether anyone would be so unscrupulous to take a Helmet from one of the memorials i'd like to think not but ............ there are always people who would do that i'm afraid !!!
