U boat pens Saint Nazaire

what an amazing place ,and in time warp condition ,a daft question but can i ask what the lengths of timber/metal spaced out along the entrance on the period photograph were for ,cheers james

Five Victoria Crosses and eighty other decorations for gallantry were awarded to British commandos and naval personnel who took part in Operation Charoit, conceived to destroy the "pens" after many previous bombing raids failed to put them out of action.

The lengths of timber thing I cannot answer I`m afraid. Pretty eerie feeling mind you being there. Studying old photos and actually comparing them was cool. If I had too my pics in black and white some bits would be scarily original.
