Default U.S.S. Slater DE766 Floating Museum

I happened upon the USS Slater recently.

According to their website: The Slater is moored on the Hudson River in Albany, New York and has undergone an extensive 15 year restoration.

I was too late for the last tour of the day, but I was able to snap these pictures. I promise to visit the Slater again soon and take extensive pictures!

At least a few of these old war horses are being saved for future generations. Do you know if this is state subsidized? Takes alot of money to keep them afloat. Thanks for posting.

This is what their website says:
Your support is so important. The USS SLATER is owned and operated by the private not for profit
Destroyer Escort Historical Museum as an IRS 501(c)(3). Founded by veterans as a living naval museum, USS SLATER is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for national significance. Its operation is funded by contributions from loyal members, volunteers, former ship crews, corporations
and private foundations. The Museum does not rely on taxpayer money, but on the generosity and patriotic spirit of those interested in preserving our naval heritage and insuring that the memory of these veterans is not forgotten when they are gone.

My girlfriend lives about 10mins away from the Slater and goes to school right in Albany. I'm planning on taking the tour next Wednesday. I'll be sure to post my review of the tour and post plenty of pictures!

As promised, I visited the floating museum. Here are some pictures:

The Slater's whale boat is one of only a handful still floating.

The kitchen has been restored and is still operational! The Slater hosts overnight scouting trips, school trips, veterans reunions, etc.

    Front depth charges

Helmets and helmets and helmets and helmets and helmets... and helmets.

A lot of them were post WW2, but a lot of them were also authentic WW2 lids

This veteran shared his experiences of sailing on a destroyer escort

Officers mess also served as an operating room. You can see the operating room lights and autoclave for sterilizing medical instruments. The veteran told a story about how the sailors would steam lobsters in there too...

The USS Slater was named after this sailor. He was manning a gun on another navy ship and continued shooting as a stricken Japanese plane plowed into his battle station.

I'm 6'4" 300lbs... no way I could sleep comfortably in this ship...

The radio room on-board. My buddies grandpa manned a similar radio room on a large landing craft.

    The bridge

Anti aircraft gun and more helmets helmets and helmets

This signal light was made by GE... their plant is only a few miles away from where the Slater is anchored.

The kids loved the tour... but they weren't exactly gentle with the helmets and other things on the tour...

The head... red seat was reserved for sailors with venereal diseases.

On the way off the ship...
