Thought shall be the harder , heart the keener,
Courage the greater as our strength faileth.
Here lies our leader ,in the dust of his greatness.
Who leaves him now , be damned forever.
We who are old now shall not leave this Battle,
But lie at his feet , in the dust with our leader
House Carles at the Battle of Hastings
Hello, Is there anywhere I can find the names of these men? I am pretty sure that the man at the back one in from the right is my father John D Murphy.
I am attaching a photo which shows him on left. The photo is showing it's age. The original appeared, I was told, in the Times during the Allied advance into Belgium. Of course there was no more detail published but my Grandparents recognised him.
He was, not long after this, shot by a sniper and sustained severe head injuries from which he never fully recovered.
