Village War Memorial Restored

This week we successfully rededicated the village of Downham, Essex's war memorial having raised the funds to carry out the work. This is the third war memorial in the area we have worked on following the £70,000 establishment of a war memorial to replace the 1976 demolished one in Wickford Essex.

On the memorial were two names with incorrect initials for WW1, one who served with CEF and the other Coldstream Guards who was also the village policeman and we were delighted Essex Police sent over a Chief Inspector to represent them.

For WW2 their were two gallantry omissions. One a DSC for a RN captain killed in August 1944 when his ship was attacked by E-boats off Normandy directly hitting the bridge.

The other was a DSM to a member of an MGB crew who often used to row onto enemy shores to pick up and drop off agents and resistance fighters.

All are now properly recorded and have their ID's back, the memorial is in good condition and preserved for another generation. The Lord Lieutenant of Essex kindly came down and with the Rev of the village did the formal service for us.
