The CE Nr. 1714 has a knuckle bow langet that looks like that. But if the sword is actually a panther head that does raise a question or two. FP

I read in the sunday sun, about a soldier who took a sword belonging to the Butcher of Belsen, when they were liberating it. The sword had a panther head with red eyes and an ss eagle...

Frogprince, I have looked and looked and i believe that it is a Model number 1706 "Scharnhorst" Eickhorn pattern sword with leopard head pommel. I saw one going on johnsonreferencebooks.com for 1500 but that was for one with the Tag. How much do you think this should be around? Also here are the other pictures.

Ray, Not particularly being a specialist on these, when I took a quick look I somehow missed seeing it, and you are correct. I also took a brief look at the sword you mentioned, and the scabbard seems to be dented and the plating peeling off (or knocked off) a base metal hilt? So even if it has a tag (which can always be be purchased separately and oftentimes is a post acquisition “dealer add on”). But at the end of the day ............... I was not that impressed with the sword itself - tag or no tag. However, I do like yours more because it looks like an earlier gilt over brass example which IMO is preferable.

With Tom (“Swordfish”) who has been missing from the boards for some time now , the one who I would have asked about value. But I also think that it’s fair to say that because “X” says an item is worth XXXX maybe he can get it from one of his customers. Or not, as the market goes up and down. Best Regards, Fred
