DAF Knife Sharpener

Here is a unique item a Butchers knife sharpening steel - this particular item was found in the Wurzburg Germany old slaughterhouse which was demolished a number of years ago - the item has a inverted SA dagger grip and the DAF(German workers Union) emblem on the grip - it should be noted that the butchers were part of the DAF III Reich german workers union.
Also reflected is a picture of a Butchers Dagger which had a scabbard and a sharpening steel as a blade - have a friend that has one of these very rare III Reich items.

Looks to me as if it was made from SA dagger parts at some point, instead of being an original factory piece.

Probably was made by one of the hardcore DAF member butchers at the slaughterhouse during the period - parts are well worn and used - still a unique one of a kind item.

I can see this happening with creating a sharpening tool as it is not against the NSDAP.. Nor does it have a national emblem on it. One of a kind improvisation. Neat find Horst!

Not to mention well thought out too!! The handle offers great grip,the cross guard offers protection and the ring allows him to hang it off the block,for easy access!!

Nice way to use an NPEA grip,(no Sa runes button and eagle inlay)
Its placed with the top guard to the front.
I wouldnt be surprised if it is an Aluminium guard, would fit the NPEA grip...

Unusual & interesting item, i,m sure Ger is right that its an NPEA Grip with an aluminium crossguard that was used to make up this sharpener, wonder what happened to the rest of the NPEA Dagger ?

The DAF was an amalgamation of 20 or so groups with perhaps 5 of them having something of a separate identity under the DAF umbrella. With programs that ranged from training schools to recreational activities. Not in my core areas, I first became better acquainted with the DAF through an alleged DAF/NSBO dagger that turned out to be a less than optimal piece of work that was a modification of an Atwood fake - that Atwood supported with forged (allegedly) factory documentation. But with the low resolution pictures that were first available it took some effort to get to a point where all of the facts became evident. (With one individual who was involved finally able to get some good high resolution pictures which showed the amateurish workmanship which became one of the additional significant (IMO) factors .)

Auf Grund des Artikels 1 § 5 Abs. 1 Satz 2 des genannten Gesetzes bestimme ich im Einvernehmen mit dem Reichswirtschaftsminister die Uniformteile und Gewebe, für die es der Erlaubnis bedarf, wie folgt:

I. Uniformteile
Bekleidungsgegenstände für die Politische Organisation der NSDAP, für SA und SA-Marine, für die SS, für das Nationalsozialistische Kraftfahr-Korps, für die Hitler-Jugend mit dem Deutschen Jungvolk, dem Bund Deutscher Mädel und den Jungmädeln sowie für die Deutsche Arbeitsfront:……………………

..................... Mützen der Deutschen Arbeitsfront.

2. Sonstige Uniformteile:
Leibriemen mit einer Mindestbreite von 45 Millimetern, Schulterriemen, Sturzhelme für das Nationalsozialistische Kraftfahr-Korps, Koppelschlösser, Zweidornschnallen, Dienstdolche der SA und SS, Fahrtenmesser für die Hitler-Jugend und das Deutsche Jungvolk .................. Steinnußknöpfe für die Deutsche Arbeitsfront, ...................

And while it's not in my area, I believe that some of the DAF belt buckles are RZM marked. So I think that the above establishes that the NSDAP exerted some kind of control over the DAF - but would leave it up to the specialists to take it from there. Regards, Fred
