The thinking regarding the restoration of antiques in general has changed over the last thirty years. Years ago it was thought value would be increased by a careful and sympathetic restoration. This thinking was widespread over various different antique fields. But in recent times the preference for "original and untouched patina" has won the day and so this dagger may simply reflect the different attitudes to repainting and restoration from an old collection. As Larry said, "it is what it is" a survivor from an old collection. I agree though the "wet paint" story is nonsense.
