Looks like a WW1 German Imperial buckle.

Yeah, it's an early 2 piece steel WW1 Imperial German buckle. Probably dating from 1915/16. I've got a similar one; but not by this maker who I'm not familiar with. Cheers, Richard.

As said before, a very interesting buckle. Probably made of steel, but please check this out by holding a magnet to it. Some WW1 buckles were made with non-ferrous "Ersatz" materials, especially by Saxon makers it seems. These materials seem not to have been too hardy, and rips and tears to the buckle body seem to be the norm for those surviving. In this case, the catch would probably be contemporary to the buckle. Needless to say, an Ersatz buckle is more desirable than a steel one.

The metal is quite soft so probably pewter,will test with a magnet if I can find one.

Very cool buckle.....most steel examples are one piece, stamped examples. I bet it's non-magnetic....
