The buckle has the arms not of Saxony, but of the Land Sachsen-Anhalt as used from 1948 to 1952 in the GDR. In 1952, the GDR adopted a centralised structure and abolished the Länder. Geographically, Sachsen-Anhalt cooresponds to the old Prussian province of Saxony, carved out of Saxon territory in 1815/16, and the Duchy of Anhalt.
