    Default 1700s British Flintlock Pistol

My wifes grandmother has this pistol that I would like to learn more about. I know it is aprox 1700s, British and possibly what is known as a highwaymans model. Its maker is Jover London.

I figured Big Ned had a matching set of these, The only information I could find were on similar models with steel barrels, this one appears to have a brass one?

Love it - this is a Very nice pistol !

Plenty of gun makers in England churning out commercial pistols at this time.
It looks like a 'pocket' model in a relatively small caliber. Something of this
quality would have been rather expensive in it's day.

To load these, you have to unscrew the barrel, but many are rusted tight
and will not come apart. After firing your one and only shot - unless you
owned a pair - the butt end ( with it's gargoyle face known as
a 'Grotesque' ) could be used as a cudgel or club.

The broken hammer could probably be replaced with a period original
or somewhat later version. These are known as 'Queen Anne'
    pistols.........

Thanks Steve, haven't heard from you in a while!
Do you think the use of brass on this model is unusual? I can only find them with steel barrels...

Also what do you think is a fair price to offer her?

The brass barrel could possibly have been targeting the Nautical purchasers....As for value, it's difficult to estimate until you look into the cost of a replacement hammer, of course. But if it tells you anything, you can buy a Replica Queen Anne for around $500 dollars these days. I doubt much that you will find an original example for much less than 2 grand or more...

Yes, the brass barrel is more unusual - as you mentioned, the ones
most commonly seen have steel barrels. They came with a special
key or wrench to unscrew the barrel, but you will rarely
find them with their original wrenches.

The broken hammer - or cock - will severely affect it's value.
I'm really only guessing, but if it were intact it would sell
in the region of $1800-$2500 and possibly more - but as
it is probably half that. If she's interested in getting rid
of it you might get it for a lot less.........

Thanks for all the info Gents I am not sure that I could afford it, and I do not want to offer her what I could afford since the owner needs the money or she would most likely keep it.
I enjoy the grotesque it is quite humorous, and would be an interesting display piece in a collection

Let her know that it will need considerable expensive repair work and it would need to be done by a professional gunsmith. I'd offer her $500 and that would be a fair deal, in my opinion. Put some time and money into it and you could have a great pistol that you could easily make back your investment on and then some.
