1960's Marlin .22

My father called the other day telling me he had found his first rifle while cleaning out his garage, its a 1960s Marlin Model 122 Auto-Safe (.22). The rifle itself is no big deal, just a little peashooter, but what has me curious is the case it was in. It has some stampings in the leather buckle, and i think the lower part may be a '44 date, the rest i have no no idea.

the 9 looks like an upside down 6 to me!

Nice Marlin. These are well made, good quality firearms.

The case seems to be a regular old commercial type
to me. Maybe the stampings are the model
numbers of the case itself.........?

I did not figure it to be military due to the lack of ink stamping, perhaps it was just wishful thinking that it is a 44 date stamp!

I'm not sure how long its been since the gun has been fired, but the action is nice and smooth and the Weaver sight is still quite clear!

Is it magazine, tube fed, or single shot.........?

Nice looking Marlin 22. Glad to see modern guns on this forum once in a while. Will check Blue Book of Gun Values on this model.

Single shot unfortunately! The selling point for this gun is the "auto safe", meaning every time the bolt is cycled, the safety engages and you have to release the safety to fire.

Seems like a nuisance to me!

'Safety first'. Not a great selling feature, but still a neat rifle.

I used to own a Marlin take-down .22 lever action.
It was a great little gun.........
