Hi,
thank you for putting it on you have answered our question on the carbine, it is the same type, also your English is very good.
Dave.
Thanks Marko ! ( I shouldn't have sold my only copy of 'Flayderman's Guide
to Antique Firearms' ! )
It's pretty obvious that these particular guns had a weak wrist area
caused by too much wood being removed or inletted to fit the
mechanism. Not a great design, but a rare Civil War rifle !
I'd love to have it in my collection.........

Hi Marko, thanks for that! I'll be sure to let the woman know... she will be very pleased!
An answer at last!-the book I was using (the Standard Catalogue of Civil War Firearms) didn't have a picture of the Read and Watson but does say it was a muzzle loading conversion of the Hall carbine made for the Confederacy-and I hope your friend slaps the bloke who was so kindly willing to take it off her hands for a $50.
An insult really. I'll bet he knows EXACTLY what it is.
Good that she didn't go for it and think 'it was
just some old gun'.........!
Regards,
Steve.
I called the woman last night. I told her that a rifle in mint condition that is similar to hers sold for $22,500, so I'd be willing to bet that hers is worth at least somewhere in the four figures especially considering the Virginia Ca. engraving on the stock. She was THRILLED! Sounded like she was jumping for joy. She is a really nice woman and deserves this more than anyone else...
I told her that I very easily could have bought the rifle from her for pennies and turned around and sold it for thousands. I was honored that she gave me a piece of her family history in the WWI American Doughboy helmet, so I really wanted to help her out.
She was very put off by the fact that the auction house offered her $50 almost as "a favor to get that worthless old gun out of her hair"
I think I wrote you before but as I just joined I'm not sure if it replied before. If she hasnt sold this yet I could be interested in it buying it from her as I had an ancestor in this unit. Here's my email mhill_68@hotmail.com
Thanks Mike
Interesting thread that deserves a bump (given the current US Civil War thread).
If you want a fair offer for it, contact The Horse Soldier Attn Sam or Wes, tell them that Dean Owen asked you to do that.
I have known the Brothers for over 25 years and they deal in the best of Civil War items, and they are honest
Send the photos and use my name, it will help.
