British Sea Service Pistol For Comment

Article about: A great day at the local gun show where I purchased this British sea service flintlock pistol. The arthritic engraving on the plate and cock have me a bit worried, but there are plenty of ma

Wouldn't the George crown mark by the hammer on the side plate be stamped rather than engraved into it? Is this normal? It seems unusual to see. (and I'm still not too comfortable with the slots on the bolts in pics 2 and 4...the 2 photos in Post #5 are more in the condition of what I would have expected to see in a 200 year old military sidearm.) Have the 2 pieces been arsenal replaced? They have the matching numbers.

There are little "2's" on a number of parts. The guns
in the links I've posted are extremely similar to this
pistol. Perhaps most of these have passed as
    originals but are actually fakes.........?

I think the pistol is fine, but a wee bit dubious about the lock and if it may have been replaced? A look inside should clear that chance up. Nice Sea Service!

Hmm..at the new pics. There's Shine still on the threads of those 200 year old bolts? And the brass cap is Rough inside and Not tarnished black?

    8 inches away.........

Steve Can I suggest that You examine (very gently) the inside of the lock plate? That should determine the pistols age for You.

Because of my reservations concerning the authenticity
of this pistol, I have contacted the seller - a friend as
well as a dealer - and he will cheerfully make a refund.

I am just not comfortable with some of the details that
have been pointed out which nag at me ( unmolested
screw heads, new looking metal, etc ) and the more
I see, the less confident I am about it, so right
    or wrong, back she goes.........

Probably wise, you would never feel 100% once doubt sets in.

However, if you had of taken the lock off and taken some good pictures of the internals I think a better answer regarding its TOTAL originality could have been given.

Stating that, I am surprised to see almost no transfer of verdigris from the brass onto the wood under the butt cap etc?
