The square end locks into the lower wood by design. I suspect it may be due to the bolt becoming loose over time, possibly due to the wood expanding and contracting in certain climates. The later No 4 bolts didn’t need this locking design, possibly due to the change in thread form and TPI.
The bayonet arrived yesterday afternoon. Got outside this morning and took some pictures. This rifle may be a mongrel dog, but at least now it has some teeth!
I've also flipped the butt disc around. Only a broad arrow on show now!
