Another update...

I sent the security a guard an e-mail making sure that it was okay that he was giving it to me for free. I offered to give him something, anything at all!

He called me and declined my offer. He said that he and his wife are happy that they're giving it to someone who is passionate about it!

He said his father-in-law was in the US submarine service and picked up the rifle at the end of the war as a souvenir.

I asked him to tell me more about the rifle but his description of the rifle has me very confused...

At first he said it was a Japanese Garand... I was really excited at first because I know that a bunch of the Japanese Type 5 Garand clones were picked up at a Japanese naval base by USN personnel... However, I am now all but certain that he meant that the rifle he is giving me is the Japanese standard issue rifle.

He confirmed that the rifle is bolt action.

He also said: "I brought up a photo of it online and it's a Type 38... and you can tell it was made at the end of the war because the butt plate is wooden."

I do know a fair amount about Japanese rifle... but I won't pretend to be an expert. In know that Type 38 rifles ceased production in like 1940 and based on his statement about the wooden butt plate... I'm thinking it's actually a transitional or last ditch Type99 rifle.

He also mentioned that the rifle has a bayonet on it!

Finally, he said the rifle has been stored in his basement for 12years... so I expect it to be rusty...
