I think it's the "sticky stuff" or cosmoline on the reciever. Usually they are smothered in that stuff. It can be a pain in the b... to take it of. I had one that was covered in this. It was so hard to remove i thought it was some kind of rust. Remove ALL wooden parts and rear sight, or secure the sight with a wire strap, and blast it with a high pressure cleaner of some kind. You can use a car cleaning product. Remember to test it first on spot that will be hidden by some wood part. Solvents will most likely not do the job with this stuff.

Thanks for the advice! I hope it'll be in good condition once she gives it to me.

A great gift!-the rifle however may not need a sight hood i.e. the foresight may not be slotted for it-early war rifles didn't have them.

Couldn't enlarge the pics and they are fairly low rez shots to start with, but I take your word for it, zwerge.

I went ahead and added some accessories to my rifle. This thing is a beauty!

It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. No real problems at all... just had to go through a lot of rags in getting all the cosmoline off!

The worst parts were getting the barrel bands off (I had to have my cousin help me the first time, and since then, I've been using a rubber mallet to help me get it off.) The other part that gave me some difficulty was cleaning the chamber. I didn't have anything that could get up in there, and my fingers are too big!
