Hi everyone, I have this Russian capture K98. There are SS markings on the butt. Are these markings likely to be authentic or has someone added them recently? Did the SS mark rifles in this way? Any help appreciated.

Looks like someone has tried to put something like wire wool to those markings on the butt.
These markings are for leather, puches, belts, tornisters, boots, shoes, tent pegs and not for a weapon.
On a weapon you must find SS markings in the butt, on the metal with the number of the SS depot. With a totenkopf. It' s lot of work to make somethin serious!
like that

Hi Douglas, those markings are sadly bogus in this context.

Yes, thats what I expected. Thanks for your help gents.
Unfortunately someone took a somewhat valuable rifle and had to make it worth less by faking stamps or markings. most collectors are not so easily fooled these days. Nice to have these forums so people can get an opinion before jumping in and getting ripped off.
The SS did, indeed, have markings on some of their weapons, but, sadly, these are Not them...

Good point Wagriff. Indeed they did. Wish I could find one of these SS contract rifles in a gun shop. Worth a pretty penny these days.
