I have never seen a finish like this on a rifle or anything else. does any one know what happened to this receiver??
It looks like orange peel instead of rust pits. it was machined of the sides and the places it needed to be smooth.IBM m1 carbineIBM m1 carbineIBM m1 carbine

Its an IBM with an underwood barrel and a SGstock which has been refinished poorly.

    thanks,

Looks like it was picked up off the battle field after a couple of years, before it got rusted to crap..
    Just my opinion

That looks more like fire damage to me, that sort of surface is found on steel thats been exposed to extreme heat over a long period. Is it from the carbon in the steel escaping?

I believe it has been reblued over rust and wear damage.

They were machined from billet rather than cast.

i know they are not cast but it has that look to it. it must have been machined from the end piece .

This was my first impression of it as well - cast poorly and then machined.
If Carbine recievers were made from billet, then I'd go with the fire theory,
but as it is not twisted or distorted, the heat was not great enough
    to make it unserviceable.........

    Steve.
