K98 Sight hood

Article about: I recently picked up this deactivated K98 and I am quite happy with it. The only things that bother me are the front sight hood and a missing cleaning rod (have to buy one someday). It is a

I found this sight hood on a local dutch website. I haven't bought it yet. Do you guys think this one is an original?

    Question

Since very few of the 98k hoods were marked in any way it is almost impossible to tell an original from a repro except that some repros are made of thinner metal. Yours is definately not one of those, but beyond that no way to tell.
If you are happy with the price, get it.

If it's a reasonable price, I don't see any problem with this hood.

    hi there,

it doesnt at first glance *look* like a russian capture as its missing the tell tale shellac and "red tinge" that they tend to have. then again this one's pretty pitted so it may've been just worn off.

    is it all mismatching?

I'm going to show my ignorance here - but what was the point of a sight hood on a k98? The sight was not THAT fragile and easily damaged was it?

The sight hood was meant to help focus on a specific target. They are very sturdy and a pain in the butt to put on. Not flimsy in the slightest. Very little bend.

Very true-they were a Big help in making a more precision aim on a target. Unfortunately, they had a tendency to get knocked off and lost, and in many photos you see them missing.

Thanks guys... what i have read is that on some guns the front sight itself was fragile and the hood was there to protect it from damage - but now i see it had a dual purpose.
