Default K98 Stock cut out question

I bougth the attached k98 stock and was wondering if anyone has an idea as to what the cut out on left side may have been for? I did find a picture showing a rifle grenade sight mounted in that area but not sure if the wood cutout was for that. Thanks.

(there are faint cartouches to confirm it is a german stock). The rear stock band is not k98.

That would be great if this ends up being a stock from a sharpshooter rifle; thanks.
