Have you tried "The Devil's Paintbrush" from Collector Grade Publications - it is an excellent resource on the Maxim.

Yes, thank you for the suggestion. Dolf is a friend of mine. Not enough detail in the book for what I am looking for.

I did recently find this thread on a Russian forum which seems to answer my questions on the various introduction dates for the sights -

ÑÏåòðîâè÷ : Ïóëåìåò Ìàêñèìà ,ìîäèôèêàöèè ,êëåéìà, ðàçëè÷èÿ ïî ãîäàì. : Èñòîðèÿ îðóæèÿ

1941 г. (с бегунком)"

If I have translated this correctly -

" At gunpoint a bit more complicated :
    1. pull the royal sight
    2. folding sight with fixed whole royal
    3. Folding sight with moving entirely : royal - early Soviet (suspended to 30 g ) ( dividing pillar 10-5-0-5-10 )
    4. Folding sight with moving the entire Soviet ( wheel ) upgraded ( dividing pillar 10-5-0-5-10 and 15-10-5-0-5-10 ) without window
    5. folding sight with moving the entire Soviet ( wheel ) late ( dividing pillar 20-15-10-5-0-5-10-15 ) , with the " beak " and duplicating the scale at the front sight (up to 1941 )
    6. Soviet sight arr. 1941 ( a runner ) "

    Great - good stuff.
I like it when collectors do their own research on a subject, building the database of what is available.

I had the regular sights and the long range top cover that replaced out the regular sights, to give elevated distances.

Mine is a 1939 sideplate gun, assembled from an all matching 1910 and using a side plate from a transferable MG08.

Sight is the type depicted as #4 in the diagram in the link - "Folding sight with moving the entire Soviet (wheel) upgraded (dividing pillar 10-5-0-5-10 and 15-10-5-0-5-10) without window."

I was trying to find where this type fit with the various other rear sights, that Russian forum helped solve the riddle.

Also in that thread is some great information regarding the gunners kit and various tools.
