    Perfect Ian,
I think you have it to a tee.
If you note there is some sort of cartridge sized piece missing from it (where the empty spring link is)
I think you are right about an optical sight rather than the old iron sight but I think it could also have been used for the big old IWS sight we used to have fitted back int he 70s.
    Great armourers piece then.
    All the best

as i think back ,, there where two 7.62 casses both with the bottom (primer end ) drilled out
one had an X in it ,,the other just a hole
one went in the breach (as if a normal bullet) and the other was pushed into the end of the flash hidder
a bit of a slap dash afair i seem to remember
and both of these bits looked very home made to me
i HAVE seen this before it has come back to me

it was at JLR/RAC bovington ,1975
and it was for IWS alignment ,,,, got there in the end

again thinking back,, this thing was used for the initial set up of optical sight as close as pos ,, but the sight would still have to be shot in by the individual user ( as every one has a diferent eye ) but it gave a good and fairly acurate starting point
becouse if the mounting of the sight were to be to far out ,,there would not be inof adjustment in the sight to correct it ,and get the shooters grouping adjusted to target centre
    cheers ian
