A2296 for me would indicate Portuguese numbering. Again if anyone else does not agree then feel free to correct me but that certainly does it for me even without the crest on the reciever. Ollie don't get alarmed its still a German wartime made k.98 rifle which you should be very pleased with.

Thanks Damien, I do not mind about the portuguese numbering, or even if it has been over stamped. I am very happy with it and love the look of the rifle, I am just new to collecting so would like to be able to spot when numbers have been overstamped etc for the future. It's still a great rifle IMO.

Damien, I'm inclined to agree with you having seen the stock serial. With the rest of the elements displaying similar stamp angles and depth, I think, Ollie, you have a rather nice piece of history in your hands. As with all examinations, the more pictures the better (!). You should be very happy with this addition to your collection.
