The US used the M97 and the M1912 both during the 1st World War. It's true that the M97 saw more use during 1917 and 1918 but 20,000 M12 shotguns like that illustrated by Tango were indeed purchased for the US Military during WW1.

The M12 saw use from 1917 through the Vietnam war and beyond. Not all of either variety - M97 or M12 - were classed as trench guns, many were used by the Air Force for airfield protection and the Navy used them for ship and dockyard protection. The Marines used them for combat during both World Wars, Korea and Vietnam and the Navy Seals had them in their inventory as well. They were also used for guarding POW Camps and other military prisons. The list is endless.

There is no doubt that Tango's example had military service, though limited, as indicated by both the inspector and government property marks.
