Short barrel for a military MkIV-is it commercial/police prroduction?
It may well be a police version, since the MK IV .38 was initially produced in 1923 for police use. From what I understand, the Mk IV .38 is a scaled down version of
the .455. The .455 went thru 6 different marks and 6 barrel lengths until being phased out in 1932; MK I & II had a 4" barrel, the Mk III thru V had a 5" barrel, and the MK VI had 6" barrels.
Commercial .38 MkIVs have a variety of barrel lengths-3, 4 or 5 "-military models of both the Webley and Enfield .38 revolvers have only a 5" barrel-available stocks of the commercial pattern were taken into service at the start of the war as pistols were in short supply. Good service webbing you have there!
Beautiful Webley and holsters...
The shorter barrel has a certain appeal than the standard one...
Regards, Thanos.
The barrel length on my MK IV is 4".
