Plus, is it me, or does it seem like this one has been sporterized , as they put it, The stock does not look original, the barrel seems longer, and different.

Still a very nice rifle though.

The previous owner took the orginal stock off and put a hunting stock on it, thats all I know at the moment

Thanks for the pic George. I cannot explain them, but it has nothing to do with the SS contract rifles. These are marked with runes or deathsheads.

    Cheers, Ade.

I agree, everything else looks normal. I'm glad ade cleared up the 243 thing, I'm a worrier when it comes to high power rifles and correct ammo. Hell I'm a worrier with low power firearms and correct ammo. I'm probably overstating here but 98 mausers are such good rifles that they lend themselves to customizing. The action is basically bulletproof.

It looks to still have the military contour barrel.

You may be able to find a military stock set and restore it to a military stock, if you want too.

When I was a teenager in the 80's I had a similar 98k without the original stock. I found a complete military stockset at a gun show for cheap. No matching numbers of course, but looked and worked great.

When I get more cash(after spending 200+ tax) I'm thinking about buying a stock from one of the forum members and selling the stock it has on it now. George

No problem Brian. But we are comparing "apples to oranges" in this case.

    Cheers, Ade.
