My Recent Pick Up: Inland GM M1 Carbine

Article about: Would it be possible to jerry-rig a proper front sight over the existing front sight?

Default My Recent Pick Up: Inland GM M1 Carbine

    Hello Everyone:

Well, I picked up this M1 Carbine, made by Inland division of General Motors. The bore is very nice, and shoots great!
The kicker... the front sight..... AGHHH!!!

I bought this from some guy who wanted some cash to purchase an "Assault Rifle" but, I guess he didn't think about what he was selling. It was a family members M1, who served in both WWII and the Korean War. Served in the 96th Infantry, A "Deadeye". It came with 4 mags, one IA, one IS, and the 30 round magazine isn't marked. I had a IA sitting around so I figured I must buy a rifle to make it complete.

The front sight just gets me... but hell, I'll buy it and shoot it.

    Thanks
    Cody

I agree, still a nice weapon - even with the non-military sight.
You should be able to find an original replacement on-line.

Is that small mag a 10 round.........?

How was the front sight attached? It looks like it was welded.I wonder if they filled in the key way for the pin that held the originals in place. A good gunsmith should be able to remove the front sight - the question will be what the barrel will look like after he does.

Nice rifle, though. I love M1 carbines. My 3 are among my favorite rifles.

Well, I do gunsmithing and it looks like it would do more harm then good to get that sight off. I don't want to mark up the barrel anymore then needed. The vet put it on, I'll leave it how he wanted it. It's my shooter, I'm working at getting a new show M1 Carbine.

    Thanks
    Cody

The small magazine is a 5 round magazine.

Shame about the bubba'd front sight, but it is what it is. Your call on a restoration. Great little rifles that handle incredibly well.

Nice carbine, Cody! Shame about the front sight, but if Mark says it can probably be fixed then I believe him!

The front sight looks like it was silver soldered on. This would mean the front sight key way is full of solder. The heat that it would take to melt the solder out would damage the Bluing. This gun looks like it had been blued at some point in it's life.
If you are going to use it as a shooter I would leave it the way it is. If you would rebarrel it the front sight would be installed in the key way without any problem. Only prioblem with rebarrel is the finnish would not match. I have all the tooling to rebuild these nice little guns. In fact I have one I am rebarreling for a guy right now with a GI barrel.
    Just my Professional Opinion.
