    Hi Sam,
    Sound advice, but this is not a procedure you would carry out with the bolt in place. You have to remove the bolt to strip it down anyway!

    you could try chalk or white wax crayon, but tipex gives best results as Ade said.

    Chalk is abrassive,I would not recommend it or you might end up like this fellow

    just info guys i was lucky enough to fire a ww1 mauser and ww2 along with a stg 44 and various german pistols that had been recovered of local iraqs they really loved the rifles though and kept them in pristine condtion nb they all went into private collections if you know what i mean , great pics by the way.

    heres my k98
    BNZ 41 not 43 as i said before
    repro sling , sight hood and cleaning rod
    not many wafenamps and some are very shallow
    and one is just an eagle and swasticker no numbers under it see pic
    its an RC and i cleaned of the horrid red laquer from the stock
    i put a water based clear laquer on it after i cleaned it to protect it
    dont worry though its an easy remove laquer i made sure of that
    it peals of like cling film funny stuff
    but it protects the wood and it has a loverly red glue lamanet finish
