Its a type 38 rifle, its looks pre war but im not sure, it still has its chrysanthemum stamped on the receiver, the chrysanthemum was scratched off rifles which were surrendered after the war, this rifle could have been a field pickup by a serving soldier as this symbol is still visible which will make this more desirable to collectors.
This is an early Type 38 made 1906-1935,by the stampings on it it has been taken out of service and assigned to a school for training purposes.

Tony, Im curios are You in the UK and is this a deactivated rifle? If so these dont come up for sale very often.I think there was one a while back and the seller was asking 250 Pounds for it then I saw what I think was the same one up for about 850!!!!.
