The sten does not have a hammer, and it fires from an open bolt.

hi Darren , with a sten gun it is impossable to have a chambered round with the bolt foward ,it doesnt work like that ,and it does not have a hammer ,the bolt has a fixed firing pin and the bolt does all the work ,IE on the foward travel the bolt piches the round from the mag puts it in the chamber until the round stops then the continude foward motion of the bolt causes the fixed firing pin to fire the round ,the blow back from that round then drives the bolt back to the triger sear .
the accsidental discharge with the sten is ,if you bang the but hard on the floor ,the breach block travels back ,not far inof to engage the trigger sear but far inof to pick up a round on its way foward again ,then of cours it has no choise but to fire that round ,it was a problem that was never fully resolved ,and has bin known to happen with a sterling although not very often as the safety on a sterling holds the bolt foward , but it can happen if the safety is off
    cheers ian

To be absolutely testical about this the sten uses a system known as pre ignition, the round is actually fired before it is fully seated in the chamber. The bolt only comes to rest againt the trunnion when the magazine is empty or is closed on it intentionally. There is no bashing of metal against metal, that's what makes a sten purrrr so nicely

Ask some of the wartime squadies about the ejection port slide and see if they still have the tops of there little finger, that was a real bitch to the old timers especially when in a fire fight, heat of the moment and snip instant manicure

Here's one found in the boot of a car in Andersonstown after a bit of a gun-battle between our battery and 1st Battalion PIRA Belfast Brigade. The rifle is a modified jungle carbine.

Its alarming how the prices have crept up over the years for these Stens. Im beginning to think that supplies of these are starting to dry up as well.Im not seing any where near as many as I used to just a few years back.
