    Perhaps someone was "hoist by their own petard". I don't think many survived and I am not sure of material used in early ones from the 1600s. Could it be bronze?

    Nice find anyway.

    I hope you are extremely careful chipping away material. You may make a mistake and ruin a valuable artifact. In fact if I were you I would show this item to a anthropoligist, or similar professional. No doubt you will be money ahead, and that is always a good thing.
