The thing is covered in markings which I can't identify.

Many of the markings are italian, perhaps when this was a gun was sold in Italy.

NO, it was imported and test proofed in Italy on 2002.

I long suspected this was the case. I have several deacts with British proof stamps that are of a similar nature. You see it on a lot of German pistols from the era, most notably the 'B.N.P' nitro proof markings.
