    Hello,
    Considering that it has ERFURT engraved on it, i would bet that it's more german than english....
    I go for a Mauser 88

    True...it's a Gewehr 1888 Mauser and it is, indeed, German. It was, as can be seen by the long stock, a Mannlicher design and was a primary rifle of the German's during WWI and was also exported all over the World. Unfortunately, they were not a strong action rifle and using modern ammunition in them is considered dangerous today.

    It's a carbine model version of the Reichskommission rifle, much rarer!

    My father said his uncle claimed it to be a English rifle for cavalry troops, guess not. Thanks everyone for the clarification and info.
