Default Veteran's Day Salute to Opa - The Pistol that started my collecting craze...

On this Veteran's Day I salute my Opa who served in WWII and got me hooked on collecting. Thanks to my Mentor, Best Friend, Leader, Collecting Buddy and Grandpa! Here is the first WWII piece I ever touched at age 15 over 35 years ago. It was the 1st Militaria Piece given to me and started my craze for WWII Militaria Collecting. I must say it would not go for much on the open market in today's collectors world. My Grandfather brought it home along with Fiesty Lydia his German Warbride. I remember shooting this pistol until the firing pin gave out and must have broke his wallet with thousands of rounds run through it. It is pretty priceless to me as Grandfather placed clear grips and a picture of his ultimate war prize Oma in the handle. Hope you enjoy a few pics of my families history.

Thanks for sharing this unique piece of family history.

I just have to ask: What's the story behind the photo with the bear cub?

The Bear...Post war he was in the town of Neuotting where he met my Oma. The bear was injured and owned by a local German man my Oma knew. Grandpa said the bear took a liking to him like a lab puppy. The local German man was sick so Grandpa went over and helped care for the man with food & extra supplies each night left over from the mess hall. The bear loved people and performing tricks so when my Grandfather would come in the door he would go crazy for food, attention and praise. I heard some cool stories about the bear and some amazing tricks the cub could do. I guess it was a way for Grandpa to get away & dump some emotional garbage from the war as well.

I'm glad this got bumped to the top . I missed it the first time.
What a personnel piece of WW2 history and a family treasure to pass down.
Was it originally nickle plated or did you Grandfather get that done?
    Excellent!

Thanks Philly Devil Dog....I think he did the plating. Kind of a beat up old piece but so many memories shooting for hours and of all my WWII pieces it is the most prized.
