Default ww2 German grenade launcher or silencer?

    can anyone identify this device?
it is a little under 10" long
it appears to fit the muzzle of a firearm
the tube on the end has a fine thread to screw it on; there is a
3/8" hole in the centre of the tube

the two hinged pieces attached by the threaded screw are marked
S499 and the bottom of the is marked L 26. No acceptance marks

it has been suggested it may be an early grenade launcher

Yes thats a grenade-launcher, looks alot like the one for the K98k, but in that case it should have a WaA mark.

It definately has the look of a suppressor but I would hazard a guess that it is not for a K98k. My guess would be for an MP-40 or similar SMG. Now if the Germans had developed a special sub-sonic round for the K98k (I am unaware of one but maybe Bill knows of one?) then yes it would work for that as well.

Silencers have holes in the inner barrel and wire mesh stuffing ( best description I can come up with when I have been drinking ) between the barrel and the outer core.
I would bet it is a grenade launcher attachment.

The second image simply shows the device with the tube removed and the base with the number L26

From another posting I think it is a Haube L 26, suppressor for the K98. It is claimed it was designed by Schatzle and 1000 were made by Fuhrhop. apparently there is an example in the Springfield Armoury Museum and a sectionized one in the Oregon military museum. Mine is number S499

    I found this under " K98 silencer, "

    thanks for all the contributions

    Gary,

The round on the left (green case) in a subsonic round for the silencer.
