Cheaply made box-almost looks home made on the inside. The hinges have been tinkered with and possibly replaced. I can see no problem with this little chess set as being something sent from home to a soldier in the field. Are all of the pieces there?
Thanks for the comments yes it is a complete set.

Even better! Nice pick up! A person usually sees either the cardboard disk sets or the little glass chess sets. This is a nice little set that could still be used today!

Could we see a photo of the board set-up? I would like to see the design of the pieces

It is hard to say, was it made pre or post 1945. It can easily be also from the 1950-ies or 1960-ies.

Many thanks, I play chess and am also interested in the design of chess pieces although I do not collect chess sets.
