Any sort of ideas as to what aircraft this gauge might have belonged to?

It would have been measured in litres i reckon Dan!...
I was thinking more in level Paul... like 800mm deep.
Not that that would help at all now that I think of it!
    .

Is it too early for a drink????

There's a chance it's pre 1945 as i don't think many piston engined aircraft were built in (West) Germany, the east used piston engined Russian training aircraft possibly equipped with German instruments!..
Thanks, that is great to know

Whatever it is, it's probably the result of over engineering and not necessary. Just like half of the things I find when tearing down a Volkswagen. I often wondered what the response would be if I were able to ask a German auto engineer "why in the lords name do you over engineer everything?".. I truly believe the response would be "because we can"..

Sorry, but in my opinion it is only an old Manometer-
How you do you get the idea it`s from a german airplaine?

    German writing means german speach.
There are germany, swiss and austria that use german speach.
And why airplane, such manometer is a often used technical meassure instrument.

Aircraft because of the four tab mounting and black bakelite housing.
I have never seen an instrument with these features used on anything else.
