Please could I have any opinions as to whether this brooch is from the period or not? I've checked around the various forums and the 'net generally but not found anything exactly like this one. It's made of messing and shares similar characteristics to some of the other runic brooches in that it's styled to evoke the great antiquity of the runes, and therefore the Germanic race.

    Apologies for the poor pictures.

    With thanks, Philip

I can see nothing that would indicate a post-war modern original. The hardware looks good and correct. The Runes were always popular in TR Germany and Scandinavia, so I'm not seeing any problem with it being period.

The brooch is 50mm in diameter so perhaps bigger than most WHW tokens? I've seen the WHW series which has various runic symbols, which is made out of an early plastic.

“Odal” is one of the characters in the runic alphabet used by Germanic tribes between the 2nd and 8th centuries, and signified inherited property, nobility, lineage and kinship. The runes were revived among Völkisch thinkers in Germany from the late 19th century onwards and subsequently adopted by the Nazis. In National Socialist Germany the Odal rune chiefly symbolised the ideology of Blut und Boden, whose central concept melded nation, race and the land. In this respect, for the Reichsnährstand the Nordic peasant, his wife and children and the land constituting the Erbhof – the hereditary farm – were the physical embodiments of Blut und Boden.

A few things from the period with the Odal rune:

The sleeve diamond for the SS Rasse und Siedlungshauptamt (SS Race and Settlement Main Office) is a copy. The RuSHA had many important connections to the Reichsnährstand.

A relic from the raising concept of National socialism i couple it with the book from A. Rosenberg " Der Mythus des 20. Jahrhunderts"

I think it's a good couple of document to understand the raise of the Third Reich.
If you think it' s not a good idea don' t hesitate to said it to me.

I think it is simple a middle european runic brooch.
Such items got modern at beginning 20ies here.
In my eyes nothing to do with the 3. Reich and i would bet it is older.

    But real nice.

I finally took some - slightly - better pictures of the brooch featured at the beginning of this thread.
