I have had this painting a number of years and will be moving it on shortly, but before it goes I thought I would share it with you. I have always thought the painter was much better at painting the face than he was at the uniform although its not too bad. I can't read the painters name but can see a date of 1942. I imagine this was done by a friend of the soldier and he posted it home to his mother where it would have proudly hung on the wall.
    All the best,
    D.

Sorry, I am unsure how to get the photo in the right orientation.

Here's a little picture help, one of the many services I offer, beyond the occasional sarcasm, pun, etc ;-)

He looks better this way, and I made him look a little bit more rosy.

    Very nice period painting.

Click, twice for detail, and you're right, some problems with the uniform, Adler, but it comes across just fine. Probably a very good likeness.

The face is central to the portrait. The uniform is secondary.
It is a nice portrait in the style of the times.
It does need a lot of minor restoration of the scuffs on the canvas.

Hello, this is a nice oil painting.
There is a special focus on eyes details.
You can observe very low details on hairs.
It seems there is no varnish.
You can ask to a professionnal to restore small lacks especillay on the face.
But depends of the restauration cost.
And old style frame can be a very good thing for it.
