Possibly a nineteenth century printing press counterweight? Several models had a neo-classical eagle balanced on the counter poise lever to aid the printing mechanism. Kind regards, Malcolm.
'I do not think we can hope for any better thing now.
We shall stick it out to the end, but we are getting weaker of course, and the end cannot be far.
It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write more. R. SCOTT.

An online search for 19th century architectural eagles brings up a few interesting items. Might be worth further investigation. Kind regards, Malcolm.

I just cant see that whats depicted in this casting is meant to be an eagle, only the auction house describe it as an eagle, they would wouldn't they, they want to sell it and pocket their commission
The plumage is all wrong
Its more of a game bird to me

I'm fairly sure that a u boat crew would pick up anything to decorate the inside of a sub with as long as they thought it would bring them luck
I've done researching which sub ...if indeed any that this bird was fitted in
I came to the same blank spot with the Luftwaffe eagle I picked up that was supposed to be off a sub.
That's the problem with third hand information.
All the best
Doug
