    we want to be free
    like our fathers were

the rivets are placed rather high which suggests an austrian m17 helmet

Thanks guys for your help !! I forgot to mention that it has M. Buse 26 in the corner . I was thinking last night could it be a referance to the Treaty of Versailles ? Something like we wish our army to be free to do what we want ? Just a thought .

Hi, that sounds about right, could be a reference to the perception that Germany was no longer free after Versailles, with the loss of territories, restrictions on the military, French troops in the Saarland etc. It could be somehow related to monarchist factions in the army, but could also relate to one of the paramilitary groups who worked in Germany between the wars, such as the Freikorps or a similar group, made up of disillusioned Great War veterans and men who had been too young to fight in the war but were pro-Kaiser and anti-Weimar, and who did wear WWI-surplus helmets and uniforms often, and had pro-Kaiser sympathies and who were behind a lot of street battles against communists, socialists and others. The plaque could be a reference to their younger combatants, who were fighting in the example of their fathers and other relatives who had fought in the Great War.

I Thank You for your comments about this plaque !! I was thinking Freikorps also but I think it would have been more dirrect with its wording . We will not know for sure what the person was thinking that had this made . I Thank You again for you comments and thoughts .
