A fascinating item!! It appears ground dug Paul, is this correct? Can you make out what it says below the Sig runes? It also appears to have a date towards the bottom left side, is it 1943?

I THINK I can see a couple of Hagel runes, one over the date and one just below letters below the Sig runes. This spoked wheel like rune was said by Himmler to represent the SS's, "Unshakable faith in the ultimate victory of our philosophy", what do you think? I like the carved background too, it appears random squiggles, but I would like to think that they're oakleaves!!

Sorry for so many questions, but I find the piece very interesting!!

    Regards, Ned.

No problems with the questions Ned that's why i posted it ! Your right it is an interesting case and certainly looks to have age on it's side !!

Not sure if it's ground dug Ned i bought it at Kurtna fair on my last visit to Estonia a week ago. The guy selling it had some nice SS Buckles for sale as well whcih were snapped up by my mate as i was too busy looking at this !!

It says GREN below the sig runes and you are right it does appear to be 2 Hagal runes carved on it which was off course also the Div sign for the Nord Divison although they never served in Estonia some of their personnel would undoubtably have been posted to and become part of III SS Panzer Korps or maybe as you say it is just the message behind the Runic symbol. Again your eagle eye has got the date as well i also believe it's 1943 as well.

    cheers

    Paul

    Hi Paul,

Thanks for the info, the Nord/III SS Panzer Idea is interesting and viable. What made me think ground dug was looking at the case in close up, it appeared to have dirt or fine sand in the recesses of the case and the grooves where the carving has taken place. But I guess it could be just natural dust or where any varnish or staining was removed during the carving process. Great item!

    Regards, Ned.
