The second is on September 19, 1943, in celebration of the second anniversary of the liberation of Bolshevism. At that time, the German occupation was nearing its end.

Meanwhile the hard life of the inhabitants of the city was governed by the orders of the occupation authorities. With warning signs that were placed in public and busy places.

The third of those that I upload is an order prohibiting the breeding and possession of pigeons, as it was feared that they were used to communicate with partisans.

In spite of everything, we will see that German soldiers like any other tourists visited the great monuments of the city and took pictures of them.

But that will be another day.

    To be continue.

PART SIX – CHURCHES AND MONUMENTS

As we said german soldiers visted and took pictures of the great Kiev´s monuments.

Geography of the USSR. Kiev under the german occupation

One of the most iconic places of Kiev (then and now) is the Sofía Square with its cathedral and the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Monument.

Saint Sophia Cathedral is an outstanding architectural monument of Kiev. The cathedral is one of the city's best known landmarks and the first heritage site in Ukraine to be inscribed on the World Heritage List. Aside from its main building, the cathedral includes an ensemble of supporting structures such as a bell tower and the House of Metropolitan.

Two images of the bell tower of the Sofia Cathedral.

On the other side of Sofia's square we find the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Monument, which we will have the opportunity to see more times along the thread.

The monument to Bohdan Khmelnytsky is one of the most representative of the city. It was made in honor of Cossack leader Bohdan Khmelnytsky, an important military and political figure in the history of Ukraine. It was erected in 1888 with the design of the sculptor Mikhail Mikeshin.
The monument is located in the central square of Sofia, in front of the Cathedral of Saint Sophia, in the Shevchenko district of the Ukrainian capital.

Another of the monuments and tourist attractions for the occupants was the Church of San Andrés (often called San Andrés Cathedral) is a baroque building that was built between 1747 and 1754 under the design of Russian imperial architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli.
It is located in the historic district of Podil, at the foot of a hill: Andriyivska hill, which is what gives it its name and is in fact one of the four architectural jewels of Ukraine and Treasury of Humanity.

Two photographs of the church of St. Andrew of Kiev taken by two German soldiers.

And to finish this small section dedicated to the monuments of the city that attracted the attention of German photographers, we will talk about the cathedral of St. Vladimir.

St. Vladimir's Cathedral is an orthodox cathedral erected in the center of the city. One of the most important temples of the city, it was erected on the occasion of the ninth centenary of the Christianization of the Rus of Kiev, construction began in 1862. In neo-Byzantine style, important contemporary Russian artists participated in its colorful and luxurious interior decoration.
It was consecrated in 1896, in the presence of Tsar Nicholas II. During the communist era, the cathedral was used as an antireligious museum, archive, and after World War II, again as an orthodox church open to worship. In 1992, it was designated headquarters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Patriarchate of Kiev.

In any case, in the most important monument of the city and perhaps the most fotographed by the Germans, it has its own story during World War Two, that deserves to be told in an independent chapter.

Kiev Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves

    PART SEVEN - LAVRA MONASTERY

First of all, thanks to the administrators who have solved an unexpected technical problem with the development of the thread.

Pechersk Lavra, also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves It is a huge monastic complex that, in addition to a labyrinthine crypt, the huge bell tower from which German soldiers liked to be photographed, and different unique buildings; Among its wonders was the Cathedral of the Assumption. A temple that was built in the 1070s by Prince Sviatoslav Jaroslavovich but was destroyed and rebuilt several times. After a fire in 1718, a comprehensive redesign of the building was done in the Ukrainian Baroque style.

That facade and the Cathedral of the Assumption do not exist now, at least as they were originally, for something that happened on November 3, 1941.

That day the leader of an allied country of Nazi Germany made an official visit to Kiev. And he wanted to know that wonder of art that was the Monastery of Lavra.

So on November 3, 1941, one of the few Kiev churches of the pre-Mongol period, the Assumption Cathedral of the Pechersk Lavra monstery, was blown up.

Three more images. In one it appears a desolate orthodox pope and in the two following, again the group of three soldiers and two female auxiliaries of a propaganda report.

German propaganda and some modern scholars attribute this attack to Soviet saboteurs. However another theory says that a series of facts suggest that the Germans organized a Soviet sabotage. In particular, shortly before the explosion, by order of the Reich Commissioner of Ukraine, Erich Koch, all the jewels were taken from the cathedral (maybe it was just a coincidence in time)

Geography of the USSR. Kiev under the german occupation

Tthe Germans filmed the cathedral in a movie and fell on official news, and the bodies of the "Underground bombers" killed presented to the public were dressed in Red Army uniforms. However, the question of who blew up the Assumption Cathedral remains open to this day.

Finally two little known aerial images of the complex that allow us to understand its large dimensions and the disappearance of the Assumption Cathedral after the explosion.

This post was extremely interesting to my wife & I as we have been going to Kyiv yearly for 23 years, since 1995. We recognize many of the pictures such as St. Andrews, St. Sophia & Perchersk Lavra. I have pictures of the Assumption Cathedral in ruins from 1995 and now it completed taken from the Bell Tower. Thanks for your work and posting.
