Certainly not a Grave marker, I suspect he has just received official notice that he's been awarded the Knight's Cross, and this is a memento from his company as part of the celebration...

I'm thinking it's likely made from wood and painted by the man's company or buddies for some deed that they or He thinks he should certainly be given the RK for. I wonder if he ever did?
