I would appreciate your help with two U-boat items I recently purchased.
The first is a drawing in ink on a piece of cloth cut from a U.S. Navy duffle bag measuring 25 inches x 15 inches. The second is a drawing and an inscription on a small overseas type hat with a tassel. There’s no label or lining in the hat and the duffle cloth is fringed all around. Each item shows an unidentified submarine and bears the inscription Zum Andenken an den 17.3.44. (In memory of March 17, 1944.) They were done in exchange for cigarettes by a crewmember of U-801 who had been taken aboard the escort carrier USS Block Island after his submarine had been sunk in the mid-Atlantic on the above date by depth charges and gunfire from the destroyer USS Corry and the destroyer escort USS Bronstein. (The fate of U-801 and its crew has been thoroughly documented and is available on several websites.) The souvenirs were originally obtained aboard the Block Island by a Store Keeper 3rd class, who left them to his son who sold them to me. What do you make of these finds, and what do you think they are worth?
