I believe that the original posters question was asked and thoroughly answered. There is little need or purpose to allowing this thread to deteriorate into philosophical argument. These are points which cannot be definitively answered and further discussion is well likely to simply generate resentment and anger. This thread really should be closed now.

Why, because it's a touchy subject? I don't I've said anything personally offensive, or "off track".

Why shouldn't an item like this elicit some sort of emotion?

Personally, I think you'd have to be dead inside not to have an opinion on this, instead of viewing it as "just another item of historical significance".

If someone wants to run to a mod to have it shut down, that's fine, but I don't see where it's really necessary. But then again, I've just recently had a post completely deleted by a mod, which is another form of censure... But then again the mod probably did me a favor ;-)

And with respect to the OP, I'm sorry if I did voice an opinion on this that wasn't helpful in actually finding the flag. Thx for posting about something I'd never heard about before, as this is an interesting subject.

Let's keep this thread on track and discuss the item and not the politics. The Blutfahne was present at every Reichsparteitag. One of it's functions was to consecrate any new Deutschland Erwacht Standartes. Hitler would grab a corner of the Blutfahne and a corner of the DE and hold them together. The DE would then be used to consecrate all of the sturmfahne in the Standarte. The Nazi cleverly used symbols and actions from the Christian religion and adapted them to their own purposes. Holy blood and martyrs to the cause were important symbols to the National Socialist movement.

Thx for the link Kradmeirder, very informative ;-)

Was the blood ever washed out of the flag, or left as is after the Putsch?

The blood was never washed out-it was considered the blood of martyrs...

Personally. I tend to believe in the order you've listed. I highly doubt #3 ,that there is a "Keeper of the Grail" out there somewhere. Almost certainly, there would have been whispered rumours and word on it. It's a long stretch to think that there is/was a German version of the Fisher King faithfully guarding it for all these decades and his descendants also, without even a Peep of a word getting out. I think it is highly likely that it was simply destroyed and lost in the bombings as were so many Other treasures-both Third Reich and Other Historical pieces that vanished forever in the war. Remember, Many tens of millions of party flags were made in the 1933-1945 era and 90% of them were destroyed and disposed of after the war's disastrous conclusion. Only so many could have been taken away by Allied soldiers as souvenirs and the chances of the Blood Flag being amongst that number are slim indeed. It was, after all, not very spectacular looking-why would a GI grab That one when it was all stained and dirty when he could just as easily have picked up a fine looking Kriegs flag or State flag that was So much more impressive in appearance? No, I imagine, that If there had been traces of it found in the rubble that it would simply have been burnt and trashed with the rest of the "Nazi stuff".
Would it have been a GI grab or more likely a Red Army soldier's trophy? If this flag was not destroyed, or taken to South America (or Spain) maybe it is stored in a Russian archive?

Proving authenticity of the flag would not be so hard, given that the blood is supposed to be mainly from one person, forensic DNA science would only have to match the blood DNA against a family member living today...it would be expensive but given the perceived historical and monetory value of the flag to a collector or museum it would still be beer money in comparison.

Interesting thread about a subject I had not heard of before....thanks to all who have contributed thus far

These LIFE magazine images by Hugo Jaeger of the Blutfahne is pretty evocative... although blood stains are not that apparent. Was it really stained with blood or was this just another Nazi propaganda myth with which to inspire the faithful—just as Holy relics were used in past ages.

.....the flag was no longer attached to the staff by its original sewn-in sleeve, but by a red-white-black intertwined cord which ran through the sleeve instead.
There doesn't appear to be any sign of "a red-white-black intertwined cord" on the flagstaff in the photos above?

I'm really glad the thread is on track (don't agree it should be closed; why should it?)
Sometimes is necessary a "spike" to make a thread even more interesting. Now the thread is on track and we're "all good with it" I'd like to say to kilomikesierra1960 there's absolutely no need to apologise and nobody was offended; I'd also like to thank lizardking and 4thscorpion the great pics posted here.
Personaly I consider this a very interesting theme (that's why I started the thread) because of what the flag represented and because of the mystery it goes with it in what concerns it's whereabouts after the war (guess everybody loves a good mystery...)
Thank you all for your opinions, informations and pics and if anybody has any other relevant info or new pic pls post here
