Hitler's birthplace should be seized, torn down, Austrian politician says

Austria's government moved on Tuesday to seize the house where Adolf Hitler was born to prevent it becoming a site of pilgrimage for neo-Nazis, and the country's interior minister said he wanted to tear it down.

Hitler's family lived in the house in Braunau on the Inn for only three years around his birth on April 20, 1889; but the fate of the three-story building coated in pale yellow paint has long been the subject of controversy.

A spokesman for the interior ministry said the government had agreed on a law to take ownership after the building's landlord, a local woman, had refused to sell it to the state. The bill would now go before parliament.

"The decision is necessary because the republic would like to prevent this house from becoming a 'cult site' for neo-Nazis in any way, which it has been repeatedly in the past, when people gathered there to shout slogans," Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka told reporters before the cabinet meeting.

"It is my vision to tear down the house," he added. A commission consisting of 12 members from the fields of politics, administration, academia and civic society will ultimately decide the fate of the building.

    No right to appeal
A retired local woman owns the property, which Austria's interior ministry has been renting since 1972 and has sublet to Braunau. The ministry pays around 4,800 euros ($6,926 Cdn) a month in rent.

The building has housed workshops for disabled people, but has been empty since 2011, because the owner repeatedly rejected ideas for the future use of the house and purchase offers from the state, according to the interior ministry spokesman.

Once the law has passed parliament, the owner has no right to appeal the decision or negotiate her compensation, which will be in line with the sum paid to home owners evicted in the course of railway line construction, he said.

Nazi Germany annexed Austria in 1938. Debate still smolders over whether Austrians were willing accomplices, many having cheered his return to his country of birth at the time, or the first victims of a dictatorship that ultimately reduced much of Europe to ruins and cost tens of millions of lives.

There's just something disturbing about this strange effort these days to erase History so that we can all pretend that it never happened. One sees this in the US with the Civil War controversies, etc. It is, as said, abit disturbing in my eyes. Opinions and attitudes do change over the years and to destroy something Today that Tomorrow may be felt differently about is not sitting right.

I agree friend erasing history doesn't change a damned thing. It just makes everyone stupid.

Agree guys. Destroying the house will not change history. Many politicians usually jump on what is popular and make changes for their own personal gain. Usually buckle under to "political correctness" like the removal of the Confederate flag over here.

The man was a monster who lead a movement and war that killed many millions of people. There are many kz camps that still exist as a testament to his madness. I could care less if his boyhood home is torn down.
There is enough left over for history to remember who he was and what he did.

History isn't always nice or pretty, but to destroy it from concerns that today are current and tomorrow may not be is foolhardy. We look today at the Great Pyramid and the Colosseum of Rome in their present day states of half destruction because someone back then decided they were not worth saving and we wish that they had not done so. When something is destroyed due to prevailing sentiment, it is presumptuous. Presumptuous that we of today can dictate what they of tomorrow will want or even be Allowed to look at. History is what it is-whether we want it to be or not. Should the castles of Europe have all been razed to the ground because at one time or another they were owned by a bloodthirsty tyrant? Were there any worse or more vicious killers than the Emperors of Rome? Nero? Tiberius? Caligula? Would we that all of their structures be destroyed? No one hates the "Bloody Kaiser" today-despite the many atrocities committed during the Great War. No one today would propose that his royal residence be torn down and a sign put up stating "This vacant lot is where Kaiser Wilhelm the II once lived".

It would be absurd to suggest that I am in favor of some sort of shrine to Hitler to be erected. But, as said, History is History-whether it was Good and Nice or Evil and Bloody. We should let the citizens of tomorrow's generations decide how they wish to handle things.
