Another bit of info that I am wondering about. Google translate, as well as myself, struggles to get this one down to its precise meaning --- any help appreciated.

"Initially designated after their garrisons, from September 1943 onwards the Police Guard Battalions or -Companies were to be designated after their Wehrkreise, with the exception of Berlin."

The "5" makes no sense here, I assume it is the number of a footnote in your source text?

In any case, the Wehrkreise [Military Areas] had Roman numerals. Wehrkreis V covered the states of Wurttemberg and Baden and the province of Hohenzollern.

Another one that I presume deals with the meaning of and following irregularities in records when it comes to the abbreviations, and order thereof, for these units ---

B. I. Pol.Wach-Btl. IV bedeutet erstes Btl. im Wkr. IV.

"If there were several battalions in a Wehrkreis, they were consecutively numbered within the latter; for example 'I. Pol.Wach-Btl. IV' means '1st Battalion of Defense Area IV'. Despite this regulation, the designations used in the files are inconsistent."

    Appreciate it!

And, yes --- the "5" in the previous quote came out of nowhere and should not be there Starting to get a solid understanding of the nature of these units here, thanks to you!

btw: The source I'm currently using is Zur Geschichte der Ordnungspolizei 1936–1945 --- I have my eye on a few more but not sure to what depth these other works deal with these smaller Police units...

These are the ones on my amazon list:

Another relevant quote that I have translated but I fear the result is not accurate enough --- any help with a correct translation would be most appreciated.

Excerpt from Der Judenmord in Polen und die deutsche Ordnungspolizei 1939-1945 by Wolfgang Curilla

    It says:

"On 30th Sept. 1943, SS-Obersturmführer Rothke of the BdS Frankreich* submitted a request to the RSHA**) to have the Schutzpolizei at Metz or Saarbrücken detail an escort detachment that was to report to Paris in time for the Jew transport of 7th Oct. 1943. To this, Eichmann responded that the Hauptamt Ordnungspolizei had ordered the BdO Stuttgart*** to provide the escort detachment. The transports of 7th Oct., 28th Oct. and 20th Nov. 1943 had escort detachments from the Strassburg- and Mulhausen-based II. Polizei-Wachbataillon im Wehrkreis V, whose commander was Major Kurt Fechner. In charge of the transports were Polizeimeister Schramm on 7th Oct. 1943 and 28th Oct. 1943 and Meister der Schutzpolizei Friedrich Kohnlein on 20th Nov. 1943. Kohnlein was in charge of four or five transports and on several occasions departed to Auschwitz from Paris and otherwise from Metz. He learned about Auschwitz being a death camp from an SS man there. Kohnlein also informed his company commander, Hauptmann Lucke. Other company members had gained the impression that the Jews were being killed in these camps, and many comrades had the same impression, too.

    The Mühlhausen-based company of the
II. Polizei-Wachbataillon im Wehrkreis V under Ernst Roth's command was also employed for transports to Auschwitz on two occasions, such as in the early summer of 1944."

Been making progress on this lately thanks to newly released documents --- in this regard I would very much appreciate some input on this excerpt below and what it entailed for the men listed.

In particular, what does "Erf. - Dienststelle PV. Stuttgart, Eins. Bes Empfänger" mean?

Also, keep finding references to a D. u. G. Abteilung (in this same Polizei context)... any ideas what this might be? Have been unable to find anything on this abbreviation so far...

So, the document excerpt is basically a list of policemen being transferred over to 1. PWB V --- I've figured that much by now but still not 100% on what it all means, exactly... if it says anything in particular about why these transfers are being made etc.

    And, of course, the one below;

"Erf. - Dienststelle PV. Stuttgart, Eins. Bes Empfänger"
