I recently came in to a collection of original photos taken during WW2 by a German army soldier. In these photos, several of the vehicles have what appears to be a battle axe painted on their front left fenders. Is this a divisional marking? I’ve been searching but haven’t found anything about such a tactical symbol...

It is certainly a unit emblem of some sort but not necessarily one at divisional level which might make it hard to track down. 344.Infanterie-Division had a battleaxe emblem that faced the same direction but their one was at an angle and looks a little different and that division only came in to being in late 1942 so if the image is from before that period than it rules that unit out.
